From choosing your colours to clearing the rooms, here’s how to get your home ready for a well-organized painting project.
A smooth painting project starts before the first drop cloth is placed.
A little preparation helps protect your belongings, gives the crew room to work, and keeps everyone working from the same plan. You do not need to do everything yourself. This guide explains what to prepare before our crew arrives and what McHugh Painting will take care of as part of your agreed project.
01 / About a week before
Start with the details.
Our production team typically contacts you about a week before your scheduled start date to confirm your project. Please have your paint colours finalized by then, and use this conversation to raise any questions.
- Confirm colours and finishes for each room and surface.
- Review the scope: walls, ceilings, trim, doors and any closets included in your estimate.
- Discuss access and special items, including pets, antiques, artwork or furniture that needs a professional mover.
- Tell us about other renovations or contractors working in your home.
Renovating at the same time? Construction dust can affect a fresh finish. Let the production team know about other work so the timing can be discussed before painting begins.
02 / Before the crew arrives
Your room-ready checklist.
Work through the items below for the rooms being painted. Focus on personal belongings, small accessories and anything fragile or valuable.
Our part / Preparation to cleanup
What we take care of.
Once your belongings are cleared, our crew handles the preparation and protection included in your agreed scope. For a typical interior painting project, this includes:
Set up & protect
Move large furniture to the centre of the room, except pianos and artwork. Take down window blinds where required and protect floors and carpeting with drop sheets or paper.
Prepare & paint
Complete the surface preparation and painting outlined in your project. Additional work outside the original scope is reviewed and approved before it is completed.
Clean & reset
Vacuum the rooms, return furniture to its original position, and remove job-related garbage and empty paint containers when the work is finished.
Leave the finishing details
Label leftover paint and leave it for you. Review care instructions and any final questions during your walkthrough.
Not sure who is moving something? Ask before the start date. Your approved estimate and the arrangements confirmed with our team are the guide for your specific project.
On painting day
A quick conversation. A clear plan.
Before work begins, we complete a homeowner orientation with Matt or your crew leader. If this meeting has not already happened, please be available on the morning of the first day. The orientation needs to be completed before the project can start.
Together, we review the scope, colours and finishes, access arrangements, areas that should remain untouched, and any special instructions.
Your crew leader will keep you updated as the work progresses and discuss the expected completion timing. If something changes or a question comes up, let Matt or your crew leader know promptly.
03 / Before we wrap up
Finish with a walkthrough.
Please arrange to be available on the last day, before the crew leaves, for a final walkthrough with Matt or your crew leader. It is your opportunity to review the work together and ask any remaining questions.

03Go over care instructions for your newly painted surfaces.
04Locate your labelled leftover paint and review the closing information.

A few common questions
Before you get started.
Do I need to move all the furniture myself?
Our crew generally moves large furniture to the centre of the room as part of the agreed project. You prepare personal belongings, small accessories and valuables. Pianos and items requiring professional movers are your responsibility; confirm any special arrangements before work begins.
Do I need to empty every closet?
Only closets included in the painting scope need to be emptied for painting. Remove all clothing and contents from those closets, including items on shelves and floors.
What if another contractor is working in my home?
Tell our production team in advance. Other construction work can create dust that affects the finish, so the sequence and timing should be discussed before your painting project starts.
When do I need to be available?
Be available for the homeowner orientation before work begins, either at a pre-arranged meeting or on the first morning. Also schedule a final walkthrough for the last day before the crew wraps up.
