Careful attention to exterior trim and architectural details.

Care for the details that make your home yours.

Refresh original trim, plaster and exterior details with care. We agree on what to preserve, repair and paint before work begins.

See the preparation and scope

Original mouldings, tall baseboards, plaster walls and a welcoming front porch give an older home its personality. A fresh finish should work with those features and the way you want to live in the space.

We start by looking at what you want to preserve, what needs attention and the result you have in mind. Your quote identifies the painting, preparation and suitable surface repairs, with original details and existing materials considered before work begins.

Whether you want a lighter interior, refreshed exterior woodwork or a colour scheme that suits the age of the house, we help make the plan clear. Specialist conservation, major reconstruction and any required material assessments are identified separately so you know what belongs in the painting project.

Original trim & doors

Refresh suitable baseboards, casings, panelled doors and other painted woodwork. We review the profiles and old finish, then agree on preparation that respects the details you want to retain.

Plaster & interior surfaces

Plan suitable local plaster repairs, surface preparation, primer and painting together. Loose plaster, recurring cracks and moisture damage need their cause and repair approach reviewed first.

Exterior character

Include suitable porch details, columns, fascia, window trim and doors. We identify the material, coating condition and access, with repairs and any heritage requirements considered before finishing.

Illustrative examples to help you plan your project.

A fresh room with its original woodwork.

The starting point: You love the tall baseboards and panelled doors, but the painted finish looks tired.

What we can do: We plan a new colour for suitable surfaces, define the preparation and protect the features you want to keep. The aim is a refreshed room that still feels like your home.

A worn plaster wall ready for a new finish.

The starting point: Old patches and local cracks draw attention away from the room’s character.

What we can do: We review whether the plaster is sound, agree on suitable repairs and define the area to repaint. Recurring movement or dampness is addressed in the plan before cosmetic finishing.

Porch details and front entry refreshed together.

The starting point: The door, columns and trim have worn differently, leaving the entrance feeling tired.

What we can do: We review the existing materials and coatings, identify repair needs and plan a coordinated finish. Original profiles and any required approvals are considered before preparation starts.

Confirm the detailsYour colour, scope, access and date.

Before you approve the work, we make sure the details are clear:

  • Colour: your chosen colours, finishes and where each will be used.
  • Scope: preparation, approved repairs and the exact surfaces included.
  • Access: rooms, furniture, pets and the areas you need to keep using.
  • Date: the planned start, work sequence and any access or drying periods.

Ask questions and make any changes before we begin, so we are all working toward the same result.

Your questions, answered.

Can you refresh an older home without losing its character?

Yes. We start with the features you want to preserve and the appearance you want to achieve. Original profiles, decorative details and the existing materials guide the preparation and finish. A repaint can refresh a home without replacing sound trim or making every surface look like new construction.

Do all the old paint layers need to be stripped off?

Not necessarily. The condition and compatibility of the existing coating determine the preparation. Sound layers may be suitable to keep, while failing paint needs an appropriate treatment. We assess older coatings before disturbing them and explain the scope; stripping everything back is not an automatic part of the quote.

Can dark trim be painted a light colour?

Yes, when painting is appropriate for the material and the features you want to preserve. Dark painted trim can become lighter with suitable preparation, primer and finish coats. If the wood is currently stained or has an important original finish, we discuss that change carefully before covering it, along with any heritage restrictions.

Can you repair original plaster and damaged wood details?

Suitable local plaster and minor wood-surface repairs can be included with painting. We identify the areas and repair limits in your quote. Loose plaster, extensive rot, structural defects or missing decorative pieces may need a specialist repair first; we explain the sequence so the finishing work starts on a sound surface.

What if the old paint contains lead?

Older coatings may contain lead, even beneath newer paint. Suspect coatings need appropriate assessment before sanding, scraping or other disturbance. We discuss this before preparation and agree on the next steps. This painting service does not include lead testing or hazardous-material abatement unless separately confirmed and arranged with appropriately qualified providers.

Does my home need a heritage permit before painting?

It may, depending on the property’s designation, protected features and proposed work. Check with your municipality’s heritage staff before changing protected surfaces or colours, especially when proposing to paint previously unpainted masonry. Share any applicable requirements with us so the quote and work plan reflect them; required approvals should be in place before affected work begins.

Can you help choose colours that suit the age of the house?

Yes. We can discuss a palette that works with the architecture, existing materials and your preferences, then confirm samples and colour placement with you. If you need an exact historical colour match, that may require research or a specialist paint analysis. We do not describe a modern colour choice as historically verified without that evidence.

Can we refresh the house in stages and stay in it during the work?

Often, with a suitable access and preparation plan. We can discuss starting with selected rooms or exterior areas and agreeing on later phases. Occupancy depends on the work and any material assessments. We confirm work zones, access, protection and timing before starting, with a crew contact to keep you informed and a walkthrough at completion.
